From lab to boardroom, startup to scale-up, Wavemakers are driven by impact and ready to turn ambition into action, for the ocean and the industries that depend on it.

Wavemakers is Ocean Impact Organisation’s internship program, designed for emerging changemakers who want to contribute to a thriving blue economy. It provides students and early-career professionals with meaningful project-based experience, professional development, and direct exposure to the ocean innovation ecosystem.

Interns are matched to strategic projects aligned with OIO’s mission. While the scope of work varies, each internship is shaped to ensure tangible outcomes, learning opportunities, and connection to a growing community of ocean impact professionals.

Program Overview

Wavemakers is Ocean Impact Organisation’s internship program, designed for emerging changemakers who want to contribute to a thriving blue economy. Interns are matched to strategic projects aligned with OIO’s mission. While the scope of work varies, each unpaid internship is shaped to ensure you see tangible outcomes, learning opportunities, and connection to a growing community of ocean impact professionals.

Who it’s for

  • University students (undergraduate, honours, masters, PhD)

  • Early-career professionals exploring pathways in ocean innovation

  • Individuals with skills or interests across areas like business, science, communications, design, AI, policy, or impact

Program Structure

Weekly check-ins, peer-to-peer learning moments, and feedback loops are built into the rhythm of the program.

Duration: 10-week internship (unpaid, part-time, flexible based on university calendars)
Format: Remote-first with optional in-person engagements (where possible)

Internship placements are matched to strategic projects fitting a current focus area of the organisation, such as:

  • Investment analysis & venture pipeline mapping

  • Ecosystem research and partner engagement

  • Commercialisation and innovation strategy

  • Ocean literacy and storytelling initiatives

  • AI and internal productivity tooling

Types of Projects

You’ll finish the program with unique perspectives and key skills, such as:

  • A deeper understanding of ocean innovation, sustainability, and the blue economy

  • Strengthened skills in research, communication, analysis, and collaboration

  • Confidence to pursue future pathways in startups, research, policy, or investment

  • A deliverable portfolio piece to showcase your impact
