#MyPieceofOcean World Oceans Day 2020

“Even if you never have the chance to see or touch the ocean, the ocean touches you with every breath you take, every drop of water you drink, every bite you consume. Everyone, everywhere is inextricably connected to and utterly dependent upon the existence of the sea" - Sylvia Earle

There’s Always a Fresh Episode of The Ocean Impact Podcast to Celebrate with…

And this episode is a really neat one….

Episode 10 of the podcast is about mobilising communities to tackle the plastic problem and features the CEO and founder of the Plastic Collective, Louise Hardman.

Louise and her team are working with communities, who are often forgotten by the rest of the world, as they fight back against the tide of plastic waste that is engulfing their environment. They provide education programs that encourage plastic to be viewed as a valuable resource and not ‘waste’, as well as engineering solutions to help operate sustainable plastic recycling micro-enterprises.

The Plastic Collective is an ocean impact initiative that has strong and well communicated social justice outcomes embedded and their work is so important if we are to achieve transformational change both environmentally and socially.

World Ocean’s Day is Happening During a Pivotal Moment in History

We all watch the news. Right now there are a lot of us hurting globally. Racism, inequality, brutality - social justice is very high on the minds of many and that’s a good thing.

But for some of us with broader environmental concerns like climate change, plastic pollution and biodiversity loss, it can be a challenge to see where we can fit within the social justice movement and act as positive and enabling agents of change.

Let us introduce you to Intersectional Environmentalism.

Here’s a great definition of Intersectional Environmentalism from activist and eco-communicator in the US Leah Thomas (who you can follow on Instagram @greengirlleah):

There’s also a lot of great articles on the subject online, so if you’re interested, learn more about it here:
