You might be asking yourself what this wine offer has to do with the mission of OIO - let us tell you a little bit about the connection.

But first, some exciting news: Ocean Impact Organisation is now a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC). This certification is an important step in our journey to attaining deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. (Note: tax-deductible donations can still be made to OIO via our auspice partners. Contact us for details if you’d like to contribute to our mission).

A Glimpse into OIO's Origins

When Nick and Tim first set about developing OIO, they knew it would be incredibly valuable to engage the Australian philanthropic community in providing the seed funding to establish the organisation and cover development costs until government grants and corporate sponsors could be solidified.

Through extensive networking Nick and Tim were introduced to a passionate and visionary business leader in Robin Tedder, who was also a member of the Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network (AEGN), which is a community of 150+ philanthropists driven to donate to environmental initiatives. After a number of meetings, Robin and his wife Rita agreed to be our ‘champion donors’ and in December 2019 they initiated a fundraising campaign to the AEGN community, resulting in seed funding from seven individuals and foundations.

Funds raised to date have enabled OIO to establish the organisation and develop our plans for the future, which includes accelerating 100 startups and running a diverse range of programs and activities to stimulate the Australian ocean impact ecosystem.

Robin also happens to be a Master of Wine (one of only 25 in Australia and 370 globally) and the owner of boutique winery Glenguin Estate. Glenguin, nestled in the picturesque Broke-Fordwich region of the NSW Hunter Valley, develops wines of the highest quality and repute. Glenguin consistently ranks in the top 5% of wineries in Australia.

We asked Robin and Rita a few questions about their love of the ocean, their love of wine and why they decided to support OIO.

OIO: Robin and Rita, please tell us how your relationship with the ocean plays out in your daily life?

RT: Rita is a passionate supporter of clean oceans having been a ‘picker of plastic’ and fishing detritus from our local beach on Sydney Harbour most mornings for the past 38 years. We are also both keen sailors and I paddle my ocean ski 3 or 4 mornings a week all year round. In 2014 I connected with the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) which resulted in Rita and I contributing to the campaign for a Sydney Marine Park. I’m a firm believer in marine protected areas and no take zones to enable ocean systems to replenish and conserve critical ecosystems.

OIO: Tell us about your love of wine and specifically, what you have achieved with Glenguin?

RT: We both love the connection between fine wine and the land it comes from. We have owned and operated Glenguin Estate for 27 years and are proud to have won major trophies and critical acclaim for the wines we produce. In 1997 I became Australia’s 7th Master of Wine (one of only 25 in Australia now). Whilst we love the winery and the wine we produce it is a small family affair and making a profit regularly feels like a mirage.

OIO: What was it about OIO and our mission that led to you supporting us and championing us to others in the AEGN?

RT: I believe in the mission of OIO and that Tim and Nick are the fellows who can pull off a project like this. Rita and I and Glenguin are backing OIO to succeed and make a big positive impact on the ocean. Lots of people advocate for marine conservation but sadly few break through and make a real difference.

OIO: Thanks for your time and support of OIO Robin and Rita. Do you have any final words?

RT: We hope the OIO community gets behind this initiative to purchase some of our delicious wine and support your mission.
